New DVD: Last Train Home
We recently added Last Train Home to the DBRL collection. The movie played at the 2010 True False Film Fest and has received some positive reviews. Here’s a synopsis from our catalog:
Every spring, China’s cities are plunged into chaos as an astonishing 130 million migrant workers journey to their home villages for the New Year’s holiday. This mass exodus is the largest human migration on the planet, an epic spectacle that reveals a country tragically caught between its rural past and industrial future. Working over several years in classic verite, Chinese-Canadian filmmaker Lixin Fan travels with one couple who have embarked on this annual trek for almost two decades.

Ooh, this is a fantastic documentary! It’s very natural-feeling in it’s relationship to the characters. You feel like you’re seeing real life for a family a world away from middle America. And, while the challenges and details of their lives are very different than what most Americans are used to, you’ll be surprised by how some things, like arguing with a teenage child, transmit across the culture gap just fine.
