New DVD: Thunder Soul

We recently added Thunder Soul to the DBRL collection. The film currently has a rating of 100% from critics at Rotten Tomatoes. Here’s a synopsis from our catalog:

The inspiring, music-filled true story of high school band leader ‘Prof’ Johnson, who took a ragtag jazz band and transformed them into the legendary funk powerhouse that took the nation by storm. Now decades later, his students prepare to gather and celebrate the man who taught them about pride, honor and the power of a deep groove in this unforgettable true story.

Biblioburro on January 25th

Biblioburro (56 min.) is the story of a librarian and a library like no other. A decade ago, Colombian grade-school teacher Luis Soriano was inspired to spend his weekends bringing a modest collection of precious books, via two hard-working donkeys, to children living in the poor, violence-ridden interior of Magdalena Province. This documentary by Carlos Rendón Zipagauta is shown in collaboration with POV, PBS’ award-winning nonfiction film series. The DVD for this film is not out yet, so we do not have a library copy. New DVD: Waiting for Superman

We recently added Waiting for Superman to the DBRL collection. The movie was directed by Davis Guggenheim, the director of An Inconvenient Truth and It Might Get Loud. The movie played at Hollywood Theatres last year and has won several awards. Here’s a synopsis from our catalog:

Provided is an engaging and inspiring look at public education in the United States. This documentary has helped launch a movement to achieve a real and lasting change through the compelling stories of five unforgettable students such as Emily, a Silicon Valley eighth-grader who is afraid of being labeled as unfit for college, and Francisco, a Bronx first-grader whose mom will do anything to give him a shot at a better life. Included are featurettes, and commentary.
